Interesting Point of the Day/Week/Month

(H/T Mike Flynn)

'"Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person"
-- Weiner publicist Risa Heller to New York Times last Saturday.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi concluded that his behavior required medical intervention. (also in the Times)

There is a strange notion implicit here: heterosexual behavior can be cured! Who knew? But isn't there something dehumanizing about the supposition that homosexuals are helpless victims of their urges while (with professional treatment and medical intervention) heterosexuals can learn to control them?'

  1. Isn't it interesting also that the comments only talk about making him "a healthier person", not making him a more moral person or a person of better character. He only goes for therapy, when he really needs Confession.

  2. I think it's a bit of a straw-man - no one's criticizing his behavior on the grounds that it's heterosexual, but rather that it's deviant. This isn't inconsistent with their belief that homosexual behavior is not deviant per se.

Compare with the reaction to the toe-tapping Republican congressman (from Minnesota?) whose name I forget, whose actions were rightly criticized as deviant homosexual behavior. Also that other guy (from Florida?).

I don't think this case illustrates a double standard with regards to heterosexual vs. homosexual orientation, although it's interesting to contrast the Democrats' reaction to this scandal with that to Clinton's.
