Look at all the pretty colors...

A new version of my latest gravity simulator is released!

Download it now!  Multi-monitor-enabled screen saver also available!

  1. Woot! I already crashed it!

And it was only 958 planets at 1024x768.

  2. Well, I guess technically, it didn't crash. It just was not responding for a while.

  3. On my dual-core processor at work, turning on the influence field with a few hundred planets while running full-screen can easily take 20-30 seconds to draw one frame. 958 x 1024 x 768 = 700,000,000+ gravity calculations per frame. That's a lot of math. Even at the default size, with a lot of planets it can take more than 3 secs/frame with a full influence field.

  4. Yum... People come by my desk and get drawn in to watching the simulator... now, with the faster speed, it's effect will be even greater.

    It draws you in.

  5. The current sim I have running has the following stats:

    Sim16856: P: 9/10/288 S:602190 (and counting) T:1000 F:22 E: 166,082,115,723, 307... (then it doesn't give any more information)

Is there any way to speed up the sim?

  6. No... no way to speed it up. And by the looks of it, that's one of those that could go forever. Let it run for a week and see what happens. The highest score I've ever gotten is around 3,000,000.

  7. Yeah, the problem I have is I eventually need to shut my laptop down to keep ti from overheating.

Is there a way to pause the simulation and restart it after a reboot? (can this feature be added?)

  8. Ok, load/save would be a lot of work, but you can now use = (Equals/plus) and - (minus) to speed up or slow down time. Slowest speed is the normal speed, fastest is 1024x. Note that this means it runs the sim x times per frame, i.e. 1024x speed means it COMPUTES 1024 states between each render with no loss of accuracy. On my PC, with < ~50 planets there is no loss in frame rate. Some systems will stabilize before the first frame is drawn.

  9. wow! Neat change. I can see what you mean by either hitting stability or crashing the program... at 1024x the speed of the sim. wow.
